I had the pleasure (total sarcasm!) of attending my doctor’s office in January for my annual physical. After being poked and prodded for ½ hour, my doctor informed me that I was in good overall health BUT, she wanted me to start taking daily Vitamin D and Calcium supplements. After all, these supplements are recommended for women my age. *Shudder* I think I aged 10 years after hearing those words, lol.
So when I was contacted by Nordic Naturals to review some of their supplement products, I jumped right on board.
Who is Nordic Naturals? Nordic Naturals is a line of fish oil supplements that were “born” in Arctic Norway where founder, Joar Ophein, grew up. Joar moved to California in the 1980’s and quickly realized he was unable to find quality fish oil to manage his old gymnastic injuries. This inspired him to create Nordic Naturals.
Many of us take daily multivitamins and other supplements. They can be an important way to help us get the recommended daily value of nutrients our bodies require. Problem is, there is an endless choice of vitamins and supplements out there. It can be difficult to choose which one is right for you.

Purified Fish Oil, which is the main ingredient in many of Nordic Naturals products, is the prime food source of the Omega-3’s EPA & DHA.
Anyone wondering what Omega 3 EFA’s are, and why we need them?
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are polyunsaturated fats that are necessary for optimal health, but that our bodies cannot produce. Therefore, they must be consumed through food or supplements. There are two families of EFAs: omega-3 and omega-6, which need to be consumed in a balanced ratio. The body must receive a balanced supply of omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs to ensure proper eicosanoids production. Eicosanoids are hormone-like compounds that affect virtually every system in the body—they regulate pain, support healthy inflammatory levels, help maintain proper blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and promote fluid nerve transmission. The problem is that, in our modern industrialized food system, omega-3s have become largely absent from the food chain while omega-6s have become overabundant. Even the healthiest diets contain too many omega-6s and not enough omega-3s. Decades of scientific evidence indicates that this EFA imbalance can contribute to chronic inflammation and a variety of health issues. The most beneficial omega-3s that we’re missing are eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Purified fish oil is the best direct source of EPA and DHA.

I dug into my supplement stash right away. Since I hadn’t taken any supplements that day, I decided to try the Nordic Berries Multivitamins sample first. These multivitamin berries are definitely easy on the palate. With a citrusey sweet flavour, you would have no trouble getting your little ones to eat these. This multivitamin provides 100% of the recommended daily value of vitamins A, B, C, D3 and E.
It must be the cute packaging that attracted me to my next choice, the Nordic Omega-3 Jellies. Shhhh...don’t tell the kidlets but these Omega-3 Jellies are made from anchovies and sardines! Shaped like a cute fish, these jellies are a tasty “tutti-frutti” flavoured Omega-3 supplement that your kids will love. There is NO hint of a “fishy” taste.
I soon began to realize that my samples were all tasting too good to me. It was hard to resist not eating more supplements at once - they taste very much like candy to me. So take that as my warning about the children’s supplements. Be sure to keep them out of reach of your little ones or they may be digging into the bottles for more. The ONLY thing that stopped me was that I understand that too much of a good thing (vitamins) may not be so good for my body.
So on that note, I decided for my third trial I would stick to the supplements that I had originally been wanting to try - the Omega-3D Purified Fish Oil with Vitamin D3. These supplements were the ones I chose thanks to my doctor’s advice that I should be taking Vitamin D. These supplements come in a soft gel form that are easy to swallow. In childhood, fish oil has been shown to improve anxiety, attention, and cognitive problems in children with learning difficulties and ADHD-related symptoms.

In older adults, EPA and DHA can slow the memory impairment and cognitive decline associated with aging.

Speaking of information, I have never seen a company provide so much product information and research data to support their claims. While there are many options out there for those of us wishing to take fish oil supplements, I love the fact that Nordic Naturals uses purified deep sea fish oil from anchovies and sardines. Think fish oil is all the same? Think again!
